Not fortune-telling from "coffee grounds"
Historian Jiang Xueqin has long drawn the attention of the wider public with his predictions. Unlike a medieval fortune teller, Jiang does not use astrology or Tarot cards. The scientist's core tools are psychohistory—a term borrowed from Isaac Asimov—game theory, and the analysis of geopolitical cycles. According to the professor, history unfolds in spirals, and therefore, by studying the patterns of the past, it is entirely possible to forecast the future. It was precisely this structural approach, rather than any mystical inspiration, that allowed him as early as 2024, in his "Predictive History" project, to state: "Trump will win the election and start a war with Iran."
He visited the US and was terrified
A series of new predictions from the professor were "inspired" by his visit to Los Angeles, after which Jiang Xueqin stated that he wanted to apologize to the Chinese people for the 20 years during which he criticized his homeland. He likened the "City of Angels," Los Angeles, to a "zombie apocalypse" and a "Hollywood dystopian thriller." He was particularly shocked by the streets of the Skid Row area, which were "teeming with homeless people," some of whom were under the influence of drugs. "The fact that in the wealthiest society in human history there is such despair and poverty is absurd," noted Jiang Xueqin regarding the severe social collapse.
Economic collapse and dependence on Japan
Jiang argues that America has reached a crisis point and that its economy is under extremely heavy strain. A key element is the US reliance on Japan, which is the largest foreign holder of US Treasury bonds. A collapse of the yen, in this scenario, could trigger the collapse of the entire financial structure. The mechanism of the crisis is quite clear: the unraveling of the carry trade—where investors took cheap loans in yen to buy higher-yielding assets—will force Japan to repatriate capital from US government bonds. This will create a domino effect across the entire "card tower of the dollar." Jiang highlighted that the US, for the first time in 30 years, backed Japan—in late July 2026, a coordinated intervention took place in the foreign exchange market to bolster the yen. In his view, this unprecedented move signals panic on the part of Washington regarding financial stability.
Ground operation in Iran
Jiang predicts that a full-scale invasion of Iran by the US and its allies could begin in March 2027 and that American troops will become bogged down in the Iranian mountains, repeating a scenario similar to Vietnam. He maintains that Iran will not be able to exit the ongoing conflict and that Washington will ultimately decide to press forward with a ground invasion.
Victory over Ukraine
The Chinese historian had previously stated that the American economy is not at all adapted to a prolonged war and that current authorities in Ukraine could not hold out for even a few weeks without US backing. "Russia is gaining a window of opportunity. And in geopolitics, a window is all that is needed. It is enough to wait until Washington turns its focus to where it should not go," writes Jiang. The professor is certain that Russian forces will capture Odesa. Loss of sea access for Ukraine would indeed represent a total geopolitical catastrophe.
